"I could never sell anything" is the most common reason people give for not starting. It rests on a mistaken idea of what the work involves.

What the job actually is

Nobody is asking you to persuade a stranger to buy something they do not want. In practice the activity is:

  • Using products and forming an honest opinion about them
  • Answering questions from people who asked you
  • Ordering things for people who want them

That is closer to being a helpful friend than to sales. The pushy version exists, but it works badly, and the people doing it are not the ones still here in year three.

Why reluctance is an advantage

People who dislike selling tend to do the things that actually work:

  • They do not mass-message contacts, because it would embarrass them
  • They only recommend what they have used, because they cannot fake enthusiasm
  • They say "I don't know" instead of inventing an answer
  • They let people say no without a fight

Every one of those builds trust, which is the thing that produces repeat orders. Confident sellers often skip them and burn through their contacts in two months.

What to build instead of sales skills

Product knowledge. Know eight to ten products in one category properly. This replaces persuasion entirely — you are not convincing anyone, you are answering a question well.

Honesty about limits. "That's outside what I use, let me check" makes you more credible, not less.

Patience. The conversations arrive weeks after you mention it. Nothing about this rewards urgency.

The one thing you do have to do

Tell a few people, once, that you registered and can order at a discount. That is the whole uncomfortable part, and it is one sentence said to three or four people.

If you cannot face even that, the discount on your own purchases still works and costs you nothing — plenty of people register for exactly that and never do anything else.

Where to start

Pick a category you already use, learn a handful of products in it, and answer questions when they come. The business section has a thirty-day plan built around exactly this, with no selling in it.
