Skin type tells you about oil. Skin thickness tells you about tolerance — and it is why two people with identical "combination skin" can have opposite experiences with the same active.

How to tell

Thicker skin tends to have visible pores, especially on the nose and cheeks, a more robust texture, no visible blood vessels, and a tendency toward congestion rather than redness. It usually reacts slowly to products, good or bad.

Thinner skin tends to show fine texture and small pores, visible vessels near the surface, redness that comes and goes, and lines appearing earlier. It reacts quickly to anything.

A rough check: look at the inner wrist and the area under the eyes in good light. If the vessels are clearly visible, you are on the thinner end.

Thickness is largely genetic, and it decreases gradually with age for everyone.

What it changes

For thicker skin:

  • Tolerates actives better and generally needs a higher concentration or longer use to see results
  • Congestion and blackheads are the more likely problem than irritation
  • Exfoliation is better tolerated — still not daily, but weekly is realistic
  • Results take longer to appear. Patience is required rather than escalation

For thinner skin:

  • Introduce every active at the lowest frequency and build slowly
  • Redness and stinging appear early and should be taken as a stop signal
  • Barrier support matters more than active ingredients
  • Exfoliation rarely, if at all
  • Sun protection is more important, since there is less physical buffer

The common mistake in each direction

Thicker skin: assuming nothing works, and escalating to stronger products faster than the skin's response time. Give anything eight weeks before judging.

Thinner skin: following routines written for robust skin. Most published skincare advice implicitly assumes average-to-thick skin, and following it produces the sensitised state described in the reactive-skin guide.

Where they meet

Both benefit from the same foundation: a gentle cleanser, consistent moisturiser, daily sun protection. Thickness changes the pace at which you add anything on top, not the basics.

A note on ageing

Skin thins with age for everyone, which means a routine tolerated comfortably at twenty-five may become irritating at forty-five without anything else changing. If long-standing products start stinging, this is often why.

For type-specific routines, see the skincare section.
