Toner is the step people are least sure about, largely because the product changed and its reputation did not.

What it used to be

Twenty years ago, toner meant an alcohol-based liquid intended to strip remaining oil after harsh cleansing — the era when "clean" meant tight. That version was drying and, for most people, harmful.

What it is now

Modern toners are mostly hydrating or preparatory: a lightweight liquid applied after cleansing that adds a first layer of moisture and slightly dampens the skin before the products that follow.

That second part is the underrated bit. Moisturiser applied to damp skin holds water in more effectively than moisturiser applied to dry skin, so a toner is partly a delivery mechanism for everything after it.

Who genuinely benefits

  • Dry or dehydrated skin — an extra hydration layer with no added weight
  • Anyone whose water is very hard, where cleansing leaves a slight tightness
  • People layering serums, since damp skin absorbs them better
  • Oily skin, for lightweight hydration without a heavier cream

Who can skip it

If your routine is cleanser and moisturiser and your skin is comfortable, a toner adds little. It is a genuinely optional step, and skipping it is not a mistake.

Choosing one

Look for: hydrating ingredients, a light watery texture, no fragrance if you are sensitive.

Avoid: alcohol high in the ingredient list, strong fragrance, and anything marketed as "removing remaining dirt" — if dirt remains, the problem is your cleanser.

Exfoliating toners are a different product entirely. They contain acids, are not a daily hydration step, and should be treated as an active with all the caution that implies.

How to use it

Onto clean skin, still slightly damp. Press it in with your palms rather than wiping with a cotton pad — pads absorb most of the product and add friction for no benefit.

Then moisturise immediately, while the skin is still damp. Waiting defeats the purpose.

The honest summary

A useful optional step that helps most where skin is dry or dehydrated, and does very little for balanced skin already using a good moisturiser. It is not a step to feel guilty about missing.
