The marketing suggests thirty is a cliff. It is not. Cell turnover slows gradually, skin retains slightly less water, and fine lines start holding rather than disappearing when you stop expressing.

Those are gradual shifts, and they call for two additions and a few adjustments — not an overhaul.

The two things that matter

1. Daily sun protection, without exceptions. If you have been casual about it, this is the change with the largest effect by a wide margin. Most visible ageing is accumulated UV exposure, and the damage you prevent this decade is what you are not treating in the next one.

2. A retinoid, introduced slowly. The best-evidenced over-the-counter ingredient for texture and fine lines. Start at twice a week, build up over a month, and expect months rather than weeks for visible change.

Those two, done consistently, outperform any number of serums.

The adjustments

Cleansing gets gentler. Skin tolerates stripping less well than it did at twenty. Foaming cleansers that felt fine may now leave tightness.

Moisturiser gets slightly richer, especially at night.

Hydration matters more. Skin holds less water, so the damp-skin application rule earns its place.

The eye area shows dryness first for many people. A lighter cream there is optional but reasonable.

The neck and chest — usually neglected, and they age visibly. Extend whatever you apply downward.

What not to do

Do not buy a full "anti-ageing" range at once. Several new actives introduced together is the fastest route to a damaged barrier, and irritated skin looks older, not younger.

Do not expect reversal. Good skincare slows change and improves texture. It does not undo structural ageing, and products claiming to are overpromising.

Do not abandon what works. If your routine suits you, add sunscreen and a retinoid and leave the rest.

The honest ranking

In order of effect: sun protection, not smoking, sleep, a retinoid, moisturiser, everything else. The expensive end of the market sits in "everything else".

A workable routine

Morning: gentle cleanse → moisturiser → sunscreen.

Evening: remove and cleanse → retinoid (building up) → moisturiser.

That is it. Add more only when you have a specific reason.
