Retinol has the strongest evidence base of any over-the-counter ingredient for texture and fine lines. It is also the one most people abandon in week two, because they started daily and their skin objected.

Start slowly, on a schedule

Not "as tolerated" — write it down:

WeeksFrequency
1–2Twice a week
3–4Every other day
5+Daily, if comfortable

If irritation appears, drop back one step rather than pushing through. Some mild adjustment — slight dryness, a little flaking — is normal in the first few weeks. Persistent redness, stinging or peeling is not, and means you are going too fast.

Sunscreen is part of the deal

Retinol increases sun sensitivity. Using it without daily sun protection undoes the benefit and can leave skin worse than before.

If you are not prepared to wear sunscreen every day, this is not the right ingredient to start.

How to apply it

  • At night only
  • On completely dry skin. Damp skin increases absorption and irritation. Wait ten minutes after cleansing
  • A pea-sized amount for the whole face. More is not faster, only harsher
  • Avoid the immediate eye area and the corners of the nose and mouth unless the product says otherwise
  • Moisturiser after, or before if your skin is sensitive — the "sandwich" method reduces irritation at some cost to strength

What not to combine it with

While you are adjusting, do not use on the same night:

  • Exfoliating acids
  • Scrubs
  • Vitamin C
  • Any other new active

One new thing at a time. If something reacts, you need to know which.

Timeline

Visible change takes months, not weeks. Texture and tone first, fine lines later. Judging it at four weeks tells you only that four weeks is not long enough.

Who should not use it

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding — retinoids are generally advised against; ask a doctor
  • Currently irritated, sunburnt or broken skin
  • Anyone on prescription skincare, without asking the prescriber first
  • Active rosacea or eczema — talk to a dermatologist rather than experimenting

The realistic expectation

Consistent use over six to twelve months, with daily sunscreen, produces a genuine improvement in texture. Nothing about it is dramatic or fast, and products promising otherwise are overpromising.
