Season changes everything
The same two sprays behave completely differently across the year, and this surprises people more than any other aspect of fragrance.
In heat, warm skin releases scent molecules faster. A fragrance projects further and can feel overwhelming at the quantity that was discreet in winter.
In cold, the opposite. Molecules release slowly, so the same application seems to vanish — not because it has faded but because it never lifted off the skin.
Practical consequence: apply less in summer, more in winter, and expect an eau de toilette to feel light in genuine cold.
Making it last in cold weather
- Apply to warm skin, straight after a shower, before dressing
- Moisturise first. Dry skin holds fragrance poorly, and winter skin is drier
- Use clothing — a scarf or coat collar holds fragrance for days, and keeps it perceptible when you are wrapped up
- Pulse points, where blood runs close to the surface
Making it comfortable in heat
- One or two sprays, not three
- Skin rather than clothing, since fabric radiates longer
- Reapply rather than over-apply — a small decant and one spray in the afternoon beats four in the morning
Testing before you commit
On skin, one at a time, and give it thirty minutes minimum. The opening is the part that disappears first, and judging a fragrance on it is how people end up with bottles they do not wear.
