Look at your brush. Long hairs with a tiny white bulb at one end are shed hairs — that is the follicle's business. Short broken fragments with no bulb are something else entirely. Sorting out hair breakage vs hair loss takes one second and changes everything you should do next. This article is about the fragments.

What is failing

A hair is built like a rope: keratin fibres inside, a shingled cuticle outside. The cuticle holds water in and takes the friction. Once it is worn through, the strand loses moisture and lipids, turns porous and stiff, and snaps where the stress is highest — mid-length and at the ends.

Why is my hair breaking

Two categories, because they need different responses.

External, and fixable this week:

  • Straighteners, curling tongs and hot dryers used without heat protection
  • Repeated bleaching over the whole length rather than the regrowth
  • Tight ponytails, metal-jointed elastics, the same daily bun
  • Yanking a brush through wet hair
  • Hard water, chlorine, salt water, strong sun and hard frost

Internal, and worth a blood test:

  • Low iron and ferritin
  • Thyroid problems
  • Crash dieting or rapid weight loss
  • Not enough protein in the diet

If breakage appeared suddenly with no change to your routine, the second list is the likelier suspect.

An eight-week plan

  1. Remove the cause first. A week without hot tools does more than any mask. If that is impossible, heat protectant every time, at the lowest workable temperature.
  2. Cut the broken ends. Splits travel upward; waiting means cutting more later.
  3. Alternate your masks — protein one week, hydrating or nourishing the next. Protein alone makes brittle hair more brittle.
  4. Condition every wash. Its real job is cutting the force needed to detangle, which is exactly where hair snaps.
  5. Add a leave-in cream or fluid to the lengths after every wash.
  6. Change the handling: wide-tooth comb, detangle from the ends up, microfibre towel instead of terry, loose braid at night, silk pillowcase.
  7. Test iron, ferritin and thyroid if this came on suddenly or your hair feels thinner overall.

Realistically: fewer fragments on the brush within three or four weeks, visibly denser lengths in two to three months.

The honest limit

If you also see a widening parting, hair coming out in handfuls, or bald patches, this is no longer a cosmetic question — see a doctor or trichologist for significant hair loss. No mask substitutes for a blood test.

Faberlic groups masks, conditioners and leave-ins for damaged hair into matched series; see the current catalogue on faberlic.com. For the routine around them, see the haircare guide.
