A clarifying shampoo is a stronger cleanser designed to strip away accumulated residue that normal washing leaves behind — styling products, silicones, hard-water minerals, oil.

It is a reset, used occasionally. Used weekly it becomes the cause of the dryness people then try to treat.

The signs you need one

  • Hair feels coated or heavy however recently it was washed
  • Styling products stop working the way they used to
  • Colour looks dull rather than faded
  • Curls have lost definition
  • Volume shampoo has stopped producing volume
  • Hair takes noticeably longer to dry than it used to

The common thread is hair behaving differently despite nothing else changing.

How often

Once a month for most people.

Every two weeks if you use styling products daily, swim regularly, or have very hard water.

Rarely, or never if you use minimal product, wash frequently with a normal shampoo, and have dry or damaged hair.

More than every two weeks is where it turns from useful to damaging.

How to use it

  1. Use it in place of your normal shampoo, not in addition
  2. Lather at the scalp and work through the lengths — this is one of the few times the lengths need direct washing
  3. Leave it for one to two minutes
  4. Rinse very thoroughly
  5. Follow with a mask, not just conditioner. This step is not optional — clarifying removes moisture along with residue, and skipping the mask is why people find it harsh

Who should be careful

  • Coloured hair — it can pull colour. Space it further from your colour appointments
  • Dry or bleached hair — use it rarely and always follow with a mask
  • Curly hair — genuinely useful for restoring curl pattern, but monthly at most

What it is not

It is not a treatment, not a scalp remedy, and not something that improves hair on its own. It removes what is in the way so your normal products work again.

If hair feels heavy again within a week of clarifying, the cause is the products you are using rather than a need to clarify more often.
