A three step skincare routine is not a compromise version of a real one. Skin responds to consistency, not inventory — three products used daily outperform twelve used when you remember.
The three functions, not the three products
Cleansing. Removing oil, dust, makeup and sunscreen. Nothing else works on skin that has not been cleaned.
Moisturising. Holding water in the outer layer and supporting the lipid barrier. Every skin type, oily included — dehydrated oily skin produces more oil, not less.
Sun protection. UV drives a large share of visible ageing and pigmentation. It is the step most often skipped and the one most often regretted.
Anything beyond these three is an addition aimed at a specific concern.
Matching them to your skin
| Skin type | Cleanser | Moisturiser |
|---|---|---|
| Oily | Gel or foam | Light gel or fluid |
| Dry | Milk or cream cleanser | Rich cream |
| Combination | Mild gel | Fluid, richer on dry patches |
| Sensitive | Fragrance-free, alcohol-free | Panthenol, ceramides |
Sunscreen is universal. Only the texture changes.
Why three is enough
Skin is a self-regulating system. It makes its own lipids, renews its own cells, manages its own pH. Skincare does not rebuild it — it removes what interferes and replaces what is short.
There is a second, underrated benefit: with three products you can tell what is working. With ten, a reaction has ten possible causes and you will be guessing for weeks.
When a fourth product earns its place
After three or four weeks of a stable base, and only for a named concern:
- Dullness → a vitamin C or niacinamide serum
- Fine lines → a retinoid, introduced slowly, evenings only
- Rough texture → gentle exfoliation once a week
- Winter dryness → a richer night cream swapped in
One addition at a time, three to four weeks apart. Otherwise a reaction has no traceable cause.
What is usually optional
Dedicated neck products, separate nose treatments, day-of-the-week formulas — marketing, not physiology. Toners, essences and masks are pleasant and genuinely optional.
Building the base within one range keeps textures consistent. Faberlic, in business since 1997, structures its skincare lines by step, and registration is free with a personal discount of up to 26% — worth noting when you are buying the same three products repeatedly. See the current catalogue on faberlic.com, and more guides in the skincare section.
A simple routine is skincare, not treatment. See a dermatologist for anything persistent.
