Oily skin is the type most often made worse by its own routine. The logic seems sound — remove oil, get less oil — and it produces the opposite.

The three mistakes

1. Washing too often, or too harshly. Stripping the skin removes the lipid barrier, and skin frequently responds by producing more oil. Twice a day is the maximum; foaming cleansers that leave a squeaky feeling are doing damage.

2. Skipping moisturiser. The most common one. Oil is not water — oily skin can be dehydrated, and dehydrated skin often produces more oil to compensate. A light moisturiser usually reduces shine over a few weeks rather than adding to it.

3. Over-exfoliating. Scrubbing to control texture damages the barrier and increases irritation. Once or twice a week is the ceiling.

What actually works

A gentle gel cleanser, morning and evening. Effective, not stripping.

A light gel-cream moisturiser, every day, both times. Look for textures that absorb quickly rather than rich creams.

Sun protection. Non-negotiable, and a lightweight or gel formula avoids the heaviness that puts people off.

Blotting papers instead of powder through the day. Powder layered on oil is what makes midday skin look thick.

Consistency over intensity. Oily skin responds to a stable routine and reacts badly to constant experimentation.

Realistic expectations

Oil production is largely genetic and hormonal. A good routine manages it; nothing eliminates it, and products promising to are overpromising.

What you should expect from a sensible routine: less midday shine, fewer clogged pores, and skin that feels comfortable rather than tight. What you should not expect: matte skin at hour eight.

The upside worth remembering — oily skin ages more slowly. The oil that annoys you at twenty-five is doing useful work at fifty.

When to see a doctor

Persistent inflamed acne, cystic spots, or anything painful is a medical matter rather than a cosmetic one. Over-the-counter routines manage oiliness and mild breakouts; they do not treat acne, and delaying treatment can leave scarring that is far harder to address later.
