Skin cell turnover and repair processes run faster overnight, and water loss through the skin is higher. That combination is why night products are richer than day ones and why actives are usually applied in the evening.

What the evening routine is for

Removing the day. Makeup, sunscreen, pollution. This is the non-negotiable part — everything else is optional by comparison.

Applying anything photosensitising. Retinoids and acids increase sun sensitivity, so they belong at night.

Sealing water in. Overnight water loss is higher, so a richer texture earns its place here even for people who use something light in the morning.

A routine that works

  1. Remove makeup and sunscreen — a milk, balm or micellar water, on dry skin
  2. Cleanse — your normal gentle cleanser
  3. Treatment, if you use one — retinoid or acid, on completely dry skin, and not both on the same night
  4. Moisturiser — richer than your morning one, applied to slightly damp skin

Four steps. Anything beyond this is optional and should be added one at a time.

The things that matter more than products

Sleep itself. Repair processes need it, and no cream substitutes for consistently short nights.

A clean pillowcase, changed regularly — more relevant for acne-prone skin than most product choices.

Room humidity. Central heating is the biggest single cause of waking up with tight, dull skin in winter. A humidifier does more than a night cream.

What not to do

  • Sleeping in makeup. Worse for skin than anything you could apply
  • Layering several actives. Retinoid plus acid plus vitamin C in one evening is how sensitivity starts
  • Adding products to fix a problem caused by too many products. The most common trap

The minimum that still works

If you do only one thing at night: remove everything, and moisturise. That covers most of the benefit, and it is achievable on the nights when nothing else will happen.
