Growth products are a category where the marketing consistently outruns the biology. Here is the honest version.

Growth happens at the follicle

Hair grows roughly 1–1.5 cm a month, and that rate is determined by genetics, age, hormones and general health. The growing part is the follicle, below the skin. The strand you can see is dead protein.

Nothing applied to the strand changes growth rate, because the strand is not where growth happens.

Which makes application unusual for this product

Most masks are lengths and ends only — never the roots. A growth-focused product is the exception: if it is aimed at the scalp, it goes on the scalp.

Check the instructions. Applying a length mask to the scalp makes hair greasy and flat; applying a scalp product only to the ends wastes it. The two categories look similar on the shelf and are used differently.

If it is a combined product, most benefit at the scalp comes from the massage — a minute of gentle fingertip pressure increases local blood flow, which is a small real effect.

The bigger effect: keeping what you grow

This is where most visible length actually comes from.

Twelve months of growth is 12–15 cm. If you trim 3 cm every three months because the ends are splitting, you have gained nothing.

Reduce breakage and the same growth rate produces visible length:

  • Lower heat, always use protection
  • Never brush wet hair
  • Squeeze with a t-shirt, not a terry towel
  • Loosen tight styles
  • Trim 1 cm every 10–12 weeks

When growth genuinely slows

Iron deficiency — common, easily tested, treatable. Thyroid conditions. Restrictive dieting, which stalls hair growth reliably. Postpartum and hormonal change.

If your growth has visibly slowed or shedding increased, blood tests are the useful step. A mask is not.

Realistic expectations

Better scalp condition, less breakage, more length kept. Not faster growth — nothing topical delivers that, whatever the label.
