Conditioner does more visible work than shampoo. Shampoo cleans the scalp; conditioner determines how the lengths look, feel and behave — and how much of your hair survives being combed.
Four questions
1. What is your hair's condition, not its type? Coloured, bleached or heat-styled hair needs repair-focused products regardless of whether it is fine or thick. Undamaged hair does not.
2. How fine is it? Fine hair is flattened by rich conditioners. Weight matters more than any other property here.
3. Is your scalp oily? If so, keep conditioner strictly to the lengths and choose something light.
4. What is your actual complaint? Tangling, frizz, dullness and breakage point to different products, and "all of them" usually means damage rather than a conditioner problem.
Matching
- Fine hair → lightweight, ends only, rinsed promptly
- Normal hair → standard conditioner every wash
- Dry or coarse hair → richer balm, plus a weekly mask
- Coloured hair → colour-care formulas, gentler on the cuticle
- Curly hair → the richest you can use without weighing curls down; generous quantity
- Damaged or bleached → repair and reconstruction formulas, plus a mask
The application errors
These waste more product than any wrong purchase:
Applying to soaking hair. Squeeze the water out first, or the conditioner dilutes and slides off.
Applying at the roots. Flattens fine hair, greases oily scalps, and does nothing useful — the roots are the newest, healthiest hair.
Rinsing immediately. Give it the stated time. Most need one to three minutes.
Under-rinsing. Residue makes hair heavy and dull, and it is often mistaken for the conditioner being "too rich".
Do you need a matching set?
No. Buying shampoo and conditioner from one series is convenient, and mixing is perfectly fine — many people need a clarifying or volumising shampoo with a richer conditioner, and that combination is sensible rather than a mistake.
When to add a mask
If a conditioner is not enough — hair still tangles, still looks dull — add a mask once or twice a week rather than buying a heavier daily conditioner. That gives you the extra care without the everyday weight.
